I'm Colette Brunel, Sylvarant's Chosen One. I've been dating my childhood friend Lloyd for months, but I haven't told him my secret yet.
Ever since I was born, the people around me have seen me as a concept, the Chosen One, not as a human being. I've always smiled, kept my burden to myself, and that's how I don't recognize myself as a young woman. Nor as a man.
I thought I had some kind of problem with my mind but Professor Sage reassured me. Among elves, people who feel neither male nor female are called Fei Er Mai. They're rare and even among elves discrimination is present. Fei Er Mai has to hide or conform to a gender. I find this sad.
Knowing now that I'm Fei Er Mai, I'm happier, but I don't dare tell Lloyd. Yet, he has to know sooner or later.
Now that he's asked me to make love with him for the first time, I know it's time to tell him.
“Lloyd? I have to tell you something very important. I'm not a woman.”
“What?” He asks, surprised by my words.
“I am not a woman nor a man, I’m Fei Er Mai.”
“Fei... Er Mai? What's that?”
“People who feel neither male nor female but something else.”
“I don't understand.”
“I'm sorry. I can't explain it any other way.”
“And what does that change for the two of us? You're Colette, right?”
“Of course I'm Colette! But...”
“Then you don't have to worry about that. We'll always be together.”
“But...!”
“What? Do I have to talk to you in a special way or...?”
“No, not at all! It's just... doesn't it disgust you?”
“Colette!” My lover exclaims angrily. “Don't ever say such a thing! Even if you had the appearance of a creature, I'd still love you!”
Overwhelmed by the joyous emotion that fills my body, I hug him tightly. Lloyd kisses me and we make love.
I am Colette. I'm Fei Er Mai. I will be happy with Lloyd for the rest of my life.
